MY ANSWER

The best recommended is Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support). It is most stable and secure and simple to use. It is the best to learn Linux on and is rock solid. All connectivity etc and works on about all computers. I strongly recommend you simply burn ot to CD/DVD and install it right over the current one. The "LTS" releases are Long Term Support. The others as 10.10 and 11.04 may have or come upon issues and require bug fixes and so on. THIS is why I recommend the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as your starter Linux system. It is a much simpler interface as well and you really get to know Linux like the back of your hand within weeks or months. THEN try upgrades to these others and again they may still have bugs as not LTS releases - almost a "beta" actually in comparison.

Now, you must run Update Manger FIRST to bring Linux up to speed and get everything working. This is probably what you are encountering. There is like "debian packages" thingies that are like Windows Installer and much more in the first run of Linux which need to be installed. RUN the Update Manger FIRST before contiuing with the brand new system that is not operating fully yet until you install the original Updates and Security patches. It is much like bringing a new Windows PC up to date by running Windows Updates and installing like Service Packs, driver updates, fixes etc.

A brand new Linux install is NOT going to work fully until you run Update Manager and apply all. About a 250M download. Will take an hour to download/install/ reboot and ready to go.

No doubt your package installers are not even installed in the system yet. You can not install software until you run Update Manager - the Ubuntu Software Center will not work until then.

TIP: Once you have run Update Manager and Linux is up to speed Go To > System > Ubuntu Software Center and type in "driver" in the search for Software. See if anything comes up.
ALSO Go To System > Synaptics and type in "driver" and see what is available. AT Synaptics packages also type in specifically the name of what you are using and see what is avialble as additional add ons. (You MUST first run Update Manger or nothing will work ! ! ! )
